The practice is known as &#8216;contract cheating&#8217;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>From the BBC:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/education-46530639\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cheating university students face FBI-style crackdown<\/a><\/li>\n<li>From the Guardian: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2017\/mar\/04\/essays-for-sale-the-booming-online-industry-in-writing-academic-work-to-order\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Essays for sale: the booming online industry in writing academic work to order<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Oxford University has been aware of this practice for a number of years, and warns students by means of <a href=\"https:\/\/cosy.ox.ac.uk\/accessplan\/LMSPortal\/UI\/Page\/Courses\/book.aspx?courseid=te004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lunch-time awareness sessions<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/students\/academic\/guidance\/skillls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study skills websites<\/a> and other <a href=\"https:\/\/weblearn.ox.ac.uk\/portal\/site\/:skills:plag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">support services<\/a> (Oxford login required). Students are also warned not to seek free so-called &#8216;plagiarism checking&#8217; services, which may be spurious (for example, resulting in stealing original work and selling it to others).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/tii\/files\/2018\/12\/Essay-mills-social-media-nus.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-917\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/tii\/files\/2018\/12\/Essay-mills-social-media-nus-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/tii\/files\/2018\/12\/Essay-mills-social-media-nus-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/tii\/files\/2018\/12\/Essay-mills-social-media-nus-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/tii\/files\/2018\/12\/Essay-mills-social-media-nus-144x144.png 144w, https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/tii\/files\/2018\/12\/Essay-mills-social-media-nus.png 415w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From January 2019, the providers of Turnitin will launch a new add-on product called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plagiarismtoday.com\/2018\/02\/06\/turnitin-announces-new-tool-to-combat-contract-cheating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Authorship Investigate<\/a>. This tool makes use of forensic linguistics and machine learning\u00a0to investigate a piece of student writing based on the student&#8217;s usual style, tone and other linguistic characteristics.
