{"id":856,"date":"2017-12-18T12:23:02","date_gmt":"2017-12-18T12:23:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/tii\/?p=856"},"modified":"2017-12-19T10:43:28","modified_gmt":"2017-12-19T10:43:28","slug":"turnitins-summary-of-uk-user-summit-19-oct-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/tii\/2017\/12\/18\/turnitins-summary-of-uk-user-summit-19-oct-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Turnitin&#8217;s summary of UK User Summit (19 Oct 2017)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This blog already contains an entry on the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/tii\/2017\/11\/10\/turnitin-user-summit-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">national UK User Summit<\/a> that was held in Newcastle on 19 October 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a summary (with links to further information) provided by Turnitin after the event:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More education is needed to communicate what academic integrity actually means \u2013 for both staff and students.<\/li>\n<li>This lack of understanding represents a major reputational risk for individual institutions, awarding bodies and the HE sector as a whole.<\/li>\n<li>Contract cheating is a growing industry. 800\u20131,200 different websites have been identified as selling essays \u2013 there is sure to be more out there.<\/li>\n<li>The QAA, working in partnership with Turnitin, provided an overview of its <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/go.turnitin.com\/e\/45292\/ation--PubID-3200--WiVizrSFgsl\/bd6l8t\/772116250\">latest policy<\/a><\/strong> to help HE institutions address contract cheating and essay mills.<\/li>\n<li>However, it is not just essay mills that are the problem. \u201cWhen a student gets someone else to do the work for them, they usually give it to a friend or a family member or someone they know rather than a commercial service.\u201d Phil Newton, University of Swansea (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/go.turnitin.com\/e\/45292\/watch-v--VoZmlB1Ed4\/bd75mh\/772303420\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Watch Phil&#8217;s presentation\u00a0here<\/a><\/strong>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaleducation.ox.ac.uk\/support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Support and Consultation team in Academic IT Services<\/a> (Technology-Enhanced Learning) is working closely with Turnitin and the UK higher education sector on these and many more aspects of promoting academic integrity.<\/p>\n<p>Contact Oxford University Turnitin support: <a href=\"mailto:turnitin@it.ox.ac.uk\">turnitin@it.ox.ac.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This blog already contains an entry on the national UK User Summit that was held in Newcastle on 19 October 2017.
