{"id":692,"date":"2010-08-31T09:51:52","date_gmt":"2010-08-31T08:51:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oucs.ox.ac.uk\/runcoco\/?p=692"},"modified":"2010-08-31T10:20:49","modified_gmt":"2010-08-31T09:20:49","slug":"cross-searching_workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/runcoco\/2010\/08\/31\/cross-searching_workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Cross-searching workshop in Bristol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a title=\"To the project website (new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/visualisingchina.ilrt.bris.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Visualising China Project<\/a> is hosting a one-day workshop at the ILRT in Bristol on Tuesday 21st September, with presentations and discussion on the topic of cross-searching distributed, interrelated, online resources.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The workshop will tackle topics such as harvesting protocols (including  OAI-related solutions), Semantic Web-based metadata integration  approaches, presentation layer problems\/solutions such as for ranking  search results, and scalability\/sustainability issues in  cross-searching. (from invitation email)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Among the confirmed contributions is a presentation by the Visualising China project on its solution for harvesting data linking to two large, separate image collections. The Connected Histories project will present their experiences in cross-searching more than 10 online datasets. More recommendations for speakers and topics for discussion are welcomed.<\/p>\n<p>If you have suggestions and\/or wish to attend, please contact Nikki Rogers as soon as possible: nikki.rogers@bristol.ac.uk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the project: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Visualising China Project is developing a web-based resource where users can explore digitised images of historical photographs of China.\u00a0 An <a href=\"http:\/\/visualisingchina.ilrt.bris.ac.uk\/vischina\/stars\">alpha version<\/a> allows users to explore more than 6,000 images taken between 1870 and 1950.<\/p>\n<p>The project builds on recent digitisation work undertaken by the Department of  Historical Studies at the University of Bristol where a large, growing collection of historical photographs of China was created (some are searchable and browsable at <a href=\"http:\/\/chp.ish-lyon.cnrs.fr\/\">http:\/\/chp.ish-lyon.cnrs.fr<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The Visualising China project is funded by the JISC within the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/whatwedo\/programmes\/digitisation\/econtent.aspx\">eContent Programme<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Visualising China Project is hosting a one-day workshop at the ILRT in Bristol on Tuesday 21st September, with presentations and discussion on the topic of cross-searching distributed, interrelated, online resources.
