{"id":1845,"date":"2014-07-18T15:06:25","date_gmt":"2014-07-18T14:06:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/runcoco\/?p=1845"},"modified":"2014-07-18T15:59:35","modified_gmt":"2014-07-18T14:59:35","slug":"theatre-discussion-and-ww1-children-of-the-great-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/runcoco\/2014\/07\/18\/theatre-discussion-and-ww1-children-of-the-great-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Theatre, Discussion and WW1: Children of the Great War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past 18 months\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.europeana1914-1918.eu\/en\">Europeana 1914-18<\/a>\u00a0has teamed up with intergenerational charity <a href=\"http:\/\/www.age-exchange.org.uk\/\">Age Exchange <\/a>to film and record interviews with members of the London public as part of their superb <a href=\"http:\/\/www.age-exchange.org.uk\/cotgw\/index.html\">Children of the Great War<\/a> project (<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/runcoco\/2014\/03\/13\/children-of-the-great-war\/\">see earlier post<\/a>).\u00a0Those involved\u00a0have shared immensely powerful and moving family histories of how their family was affected by the First World War, then and across subsequent generations.\u00a0People have shared memories of parents and grandparents, uncles and aunts across the home front, the theatres of war, and the family legacy of this tragic conflict. We have supported the team in\u00a0recording and archiving over\u00a0127 family histories and digitalising 5300 letters, diaries, photos and artefacts.\u00a0 To see all of the materials shared by Age Exchange in Europeana 1914-1918, then click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europeana1914-1918.eu\/en\/collection\/search?contributor_id=9590&amp;qf%5Bindex%5D%5B%5D=a\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate the success of the project and give something back to those who have contributed, Age Exchange have coordinated <strong>two exciting events<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Launch<\/strong> of the Children of the Great War visual art installation by Ivan Ritches and Simon Purins and <strong>panel discussion<\/strong> about the project on <strong>Wednesday 30th July 6.30-8.30pm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0Children of the Great War <strong>theatrical performance<\/strong> Friday <strong>1st\u00a0August 7pm\u00a0<\/strong>and Saturday<strong> 2nd August 3pm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Both events will be held\u00a0at the <strong>Bridewell Theatre, 14 Bride Lane, Fleet Street\u00a0 EC4Y 8EQ<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbf.org.uk\/\">http:\/\/www.sbf.org.uk\/<\/a>).\u00a0Tickets for the play are \u00a35 and\u00a0can be obtained\u00a0from contacting <span style=\"color: #000000\"><a href=\"mailto:alex.mustapha@age-exchange.org.uk\">alex.mustapha@age-exchange.org.uk<\/a> <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">or<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\"><a href=\"mailto:malcolm.jones@age-exchange.org.uk (or\">malcolm.jones@age-exchange.org.uk<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> (telephone:<\/span> 020 8318 9105).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The play<\/strong>, devised with an intergenerational cast, presents some of these remarkable true stories for the first time. They are performed through dance, words, and live music, with some of the original story-givers performing their own histories as part of this unique production. These scenes will include projection of personal Great War family photos, diaries and archive film footage. Altogether the\u00a0evening\u00a0aims to bring to life the humour, fear and heartbreak of soldiers and their families\u00a0both at the time of the Great\u00a0War and\u00a0over the following\u00a0century.<\/p>\n<p>Check your calenders and come join us at these two extraordinary\u00a0events. Our team will be taking part in <strong>the panel\u00a0discussion\u00a0<\/strong>on 30th which will\u00a0consider the distinctive approach of the project and how it contributes to the wider activity commemorating the First World War.\u00a0Others getting involved in the\u00a0discussion\u00a0include Louise Macfarlane\u00a0(one of the\u00a0curators from the newly opened <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iwm.org.uk\/\">Imperial War Museum<\/a>) and David Savill, Simon Puri\u0146\u0161\u00a0and Ivan Riches\u00a0from the Age Exchange team.
