{"id":492,"date":"2020-03-05T08:49:26","date_gmt":"2020-03-05T08:49:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/nexus\/?p=492"},"modified":"2020-03-05T08:52:25","modified_gmt":"2020-03-05T08:52:25","slug":"covid19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/nexus\/2020\/03\/05\/covid19\/","title":{"rendered":"Nexus365 and Covid-19 Coronavirus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft have made plans to ensure service continuity should their staff be affected. \u202fThere are currently no known impacts to Microsoft 365 services<br \/>\nHeightened awareness is in place for the following areas:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Service scale and operations<\/strong> \u2013 One of the benefits of a cloud service is the ability to scale dynamically,\u202fincluding utilisation of supply chain, reallocation of resources between services,\u202fand redistribution of load.Microsoft have already seen an increase in\u202fthe\u202fuse of Teams to which they have responded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Supporting systems<\/strong> \u2013\u202fA\u202fgeneral principle of cloud service operations is remote management and administration.\u202f\u00a0Microsoft anticipate no effect to their ability to manage the systems used to support Microsoft 365, and have\u202fconfirmed adequate capacity for\u202fstaff\u202fto work remotely at scale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>External systems<\/strong> \u2013 Microsoft are working across\u202findustry\u202fwith a focus on networking infrastructure.\u00a0They are seeing some utilisation issues with\u202fpublic\u202fingress \/ egress to China, but otherwise there are\u202fno issues identified.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact to location\u202f<\/strong>\u2013Microsoft&#8217;s services\u202fare\u202fdesigned for remote administration; however, with the recent news that the Seattle\u202farea represents a higher incidence of COVID-19 they have provided\u00a0specific details around support of the service should\u202fMicrosoft\u202fengineers\u202fbe constrained to\u202fwork\u202ffrom home. Microsoft employs a security first approach to administering Microsoft 365 service.\u202f Each engineering resource that is accountable for managing the service\u202fhas the ability to\u202fsecurely administer the service without direct access to the corporate location. Microsoft maintains multiple geographic locations outside the Seattle area with individuals who\u202fare capable of maintaining\u202fand managing the service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>People\u202f<\/strong>\u2013 As the largest provider of commercial services\u00a0Microsoft have the capability of ensuring continued operations with multiple subject matter experts in each discipline,\u202fwith geographic diversity being a consideration. Employees responsible for managing the service all have access to needed resources to\u202ftake action\u202ffrom home or the office.
