We have spoken to Dominik about the impact of his IT Innovation Challenges project using precisely the facility his project set out to bring to Oxford: the Rapidmooc.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-1611-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/youtube\" src=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/pW8UFKqxQCU?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/pW8UFKqxQCU\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/pW8UFKqxQCU<\/a><\/video><\/div><\/p>\n<h4>Please summarise your project.<\/h4>\n<p>The purpose of this project\u00a0was to create a space\u00a0for video creation where faculty, staff and students could create\u00a0videos for both internal and external\u00a0purposes\u00a0without the need for any\u00a0support in the process of recording and editing. To achieve this, we chose the\u00a0Rapidmooc\u00a0platform which is\u00a0an all-in-one hardware-software unit that\u00a0requires no prior training and can be used by anyone simply following short instructions. The process can be described in 5 steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Turn on the unit and lights,\u00a0and put on microphone<\/li>\n<li>Connect your laptop with a presentation (just as if you were connecting\u00a0it to a projector)<\/li>\n<li>Adjust camera angle using on-screen arrows<\/li>\n<li>Press record button, record and press stop button (on-screen autocue is also available)<\/li>\n<li>Press on-screen save button to copy recording to a USB memory stick.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The unit comes with all the necessary components to start recording immediately (lights, green screen, microphones) and it can be placed in multi-use rooms because it is on wheels which\u00a0make it easy to move from room to room. There are many other possible\u00a0feature\u00a0including recording from a phone or tablet wireless, picture in picture, running webinars with virtual backgrounds, etc.<\/p>\n<p>In the year since the start of the project,\u00a0over\u00a0300 videos\u00a0have been made for various purposes with uniformly positive feedback from users.\u00a0There are now\u00a02 units freely available to use for staff, student and faculty (IT Learning Centre and the Oxford Foundry)\u00a0and several departments are exploring funding options for acquiring units for internal use.<\/p>\n<p>More details with links\u00a0to all documentation,\u00a0sample videos\u00a0and an online\u00a0video course on how to use videos\u00a0available on\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctl.ox.ac.uk\/rapidmooc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centre for Teaching and Learning website<\/a>. Regular training sessions are now also being offered by the IT Learning Centre.<\/p>\n<h4>What were the outcomes of your project?<\/h4>\n<p>The key deliverables of the project are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3\u00a0spaces\u00a0where\u00a0Rapidmooc\u00a0can now be used at the university (2 still awaiting some final improvements\u00a0outside the project scope\u00a0but without demands for additional funding)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctl.ox.ac.uk\/rapidmooc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Documentation and training materials<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sbs.ox.ac.uk\/courses\/427\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Video course on using\u00a0Rapidmooc\u00a0and video creation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/said.sharepoint.com\/sites\/RapidMooc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Automated process\u00a0for booking the SBS Rapidmooc<\/a>\u00a0(internal\u00a0to SBS\u00a0only)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During the project over 300\u00a0video\u00a0were made including\u00a0an outreach video that has since received over 15,000 views on YouTube. In excess of 1500 video files were generated by the system accounting for\u00a0many trials and tests by users. Samples of produced videos are available on the Video course and were also shared via the <a href=\"http:\/\/digiknow.sbsblogs.co.uk\/2019\/06\/20\/examples-of-videos-made-with-rapidmooc-at-the-university-of-oxford\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digiknow blog<\/a>.\u00a0If all the videos\u00a0had been\u00a0produced using external\u00a0contractors, the total cost would have been\u00a0over \u00a3100,000 which is\u00a0almost three times\u00a0the cost of the\u00a0entire\u00a0project. But most of them would simply not have been produced at all.<\/p>\n<p>As a result\u00a0of the project, Dominik Luke\u0161\u00a0was invited to speak at\u00a0two events: <em>Media &amp; Learning conference<\/em> in Leuven and <em>Devlearn<\/em> 2019 in Las Vegas. The\u00a0<i>Use of Video in HE<\/i>\u00a0conference\u00a0also enabled us to\u00a0bring in contacts and knowledge from across the sector.<\/p>\n<h4>Could you summarise the benefits that your project has brought to the University, its staff and students?<\/h4>\n<p>They can be summarised under\u00a04\u00a0headings:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Developing new spaces for use to support teaching and learning<\/li>\n<li>Increasing\u00a0the production capacity of the university and faculty capabilities<\/li>\n<li>Developing relationships between departments and\u00a0divisions through collaboration<\/li>\n<li>Creation of videos that would otherwise be too costly to produce<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>What&#8217;s next for Rapidmooc?<\/h4>\n<p>The project\u00a0deliverables are now firmly embedded within the University\u00a0and will continue to serve\u00a0without any need for\u00a0further\u00a0funding.\u00a0We will continue promotion and training of the facilities and support other departments in their use and\u00a0in their acquisition of additional or alternative units (some of which are in process of\u00a0seeking funding).<\/p>\n<p>We will also continue updating the documentation in line with\u00a0future developments of the platform.\u00a0The online video course will also receive updates as new runs of the course will give more inspiration.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"TextRun SCXW58770442 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW58770442 BCX0\">Based on your experiences of running a project is there anything you can share that can inform t<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW58770442 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW58770442 BCX0\">he IT In<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW58770442 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW58770442 BCX0\">novation Challenges scheme? Do you any top tips to share with future project managers?<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The experience of working within IT Innovation Challenges was entirely positive.\u00a0We appreciated the flexibility and advice of the\u00a0programme manager.\u00a0We did discover that the accounting\u00a0processes were not familiar to the SBS finance department and this resulted in a few missteps and technical delays with fund approvals. However, everything was easily resolved by communicating directly with the programme manager.<\/p>\n<p>The key advice to future\u00a0project managers is not to underestimate the need for building personal relationships with all\u00a0departments who may need to be involved. This may include facilities and maintenance\u00a0personnel.\u00a0But even then, these\u00a0dependencies will be the main source of timeline slippage.\u00a0However, without\u00a0relying on less formal channels\u00a0of communication, achieving objectives will be a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Another area\u00a0to\u00a0take into account\u00a0is the amount of time it takes to achieve traction with dissemination efforts. Although we achieved\u00a0the headline dissemination objectives relatively early, it became clear that to make a more lasting and deeper impact\u00a0on the institution, more time\u00a0and effort\u00a0would be\u00a0needed,\u00a0and we had to seek an extension.\u00a0This was\u00a0despite the fact that\u00a0all\u00a0the reactions to the technology were positive and it was an extremely easy sell.\u00a0It simply took time for people to process the potential and get ready with material to record.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The project &#8216;Instant video creation with Rapidmooc&#8217; led by Dominik Luke\u0161, Learning Technologist at Sa\u00efd Business School, was completed successfully in\u00a0August 2019.
