{"id":1287,"date":"2019-01-16T14:59:49","date_gmt":"2019-01-16T14:59:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/innovation-challenges\/?p=1287"},"modified":"2019-12-05T09:41:36","modified_gmt":"2019-12-05T09:41:36","slug":"ideas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/innovation-challenges\/ideas\/","title":{"rendered":"What is an idea and how do I come up with ideas?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>What is an idea?<\/h3>\n<p>According to the OED, an idea\u00a0is the &#8220;conception of a standard or principle to be realized or aimed at; a conception of what is desirable or ought to be; a governing conception or principle; the plan or design according to which something is created or constructed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An idea, in other words, is a solution to a problem that we may or may not be aware of. It\u00a0may respond to a certain need, and it usually benefits\u00a0individuals or groups.<\/p>\n<p>An idea\u00a0can be an entirely new approach, something that no-one has thought of before. More often, though, an idea\u00a0simply means translating\u00a0a preexistent\u00a0practice or process to a new context.<\/p>\n<h3>Generating new ideas<\/h3>\n<p>Here are a few\u00a0suggestions on how can you come up with ideas more easily:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3>Brainstorm.<\/h3>\n<p>You can make a mind map, a list or any other form of writing down all your thoughts. Push yourself to go beyond\u00a0what comes to your mind at first. If you know the field and problem that you want to\u00a0work on,\u00a0you will not only be able to identify gaps but also develop\u00a0potential new approaches. You will certainly get asked questions and receive valuable feedback. This way you can develop your ideas or come up with new ones.<\/p>\n<p><em>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/oxford.ideascaleapp.eu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oxford Ideas\u00a0platform<\/a> encourages discussion and collaboration to help you make the most of your ideas.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Ask &#8216;old&#8217; questions anew.<\/h3>\n<p>Pick up old questions and try to think of new answers.\u00a0With digital innovations moving fast, you are likely to find that there are new ways of tackling well-known issues by\u00a0thinking beyond traditional approaches. Another strategy you can try is to rephrase your questions. Plus,\u00a0By putting yourself into a situation where you need to be creative, you are adopting the right\u00a0mindset\u00a0to\u00a0come up with more new ideas.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What are your strategies for coming up with new ideas?
