{"id":752,"date":"2010-07-21T15:00:01","date_gmt":"2010-07-21T14:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oucs.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/?p=752"},"modified":"2010-09-16T13:04:53","modified_gmt":"2010-09-16T12:04:53","slug":"joining-sites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/2010\/07\/joining-sites\/","title":{"rendered":"Joining sites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have made recently improvements to the process of becoming a member of a Joinable site.<\/p>\n<h3>What is a  joinable site?<\/h3>\n<p><span> <\/span><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> If you are  not &#8216;manually&#8217; adding members to your site then you should ensure that your site is <em>joinable<\/em>.  This allows users to both join and leave at will.<\/p>\n<p>Site Participants are  included notifications and announcements so there are benefits to  joining a site. <span> <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"head-7d44fd42ebfd92657bea5c9919f136c8e43da236\">How do I get  people to join a site?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> If a site is  set to be <em>Joinable<\/em> (either during site creation or via <em>Site  Info<\/em> &gt; <em>Manage Access<\/em>) <em>and<\/em> the site is only  available to Site Participants, (in other words is <strong>not<\/strong> available to <em>Anyone<\/em> nor <em>Logged in users<\/em>,) then if a  user tries to visit the site they will now be presented with an option to  join.<\/p>\n<p>If the site is available to <em>Anyone<\/em> and \/ or <em>Logged in users<\/em> then (obviously) they will be able to  visit the site anyway and because of this they will not be asked if  they wish to join. In this situation it is a good idea to add a <em>prominent<\/em> &#8220;Click here to join this site&#8221; link on the home page. The URL is  constructed as follows<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<pre style=\"text-align: left\">https:\/\/weblearn.ox.ac.uk\/portal\/join\/&lt;&lt;siteid&gt;&gt;<\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>where <tt>&lt;&lt;siteid&gt;&gt;<\/tt> is the long complex &#8216;site identifier&#8217; that is generally hidden from the  user interface.<\/p>\n<p>An easy way  of finding out this identifier is to look at the &#8216;web address&#8217; of the  root folder in <em>Resources<\/em>. This is found via the <em>Actions<\/em> menu, click on <em>Edit Details<\/em> and then copy the web address from  near to the bottom of the page. The <tt>&lt;&lt;site\u00a0id&gt;&gt;<\/tt> is contained within the URL and looks like <tt>cc2c88fe-a0fe-44d6-0046-89493362b2ac<\/tt>.<\/p>\n<p>For this example the URL to  join the site is:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<pre>https:\/\/weblearn.ox.ac.uk\/portal\/join\/cc2c88fe-a0fe-44d6-0046-89493362b2aa\/<\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There is also a manual for students to join sites:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>go to <em>My Workspace<\/em><\/li>\n<li>click the <em>Membership<\/em> tool on the left<\/li>\n<li>on the <em>Membership<\/em> page, click <em>Joinable  Sites<\/em><\/li>\n<li>from the list of the <em>Joinable<\/em> sites, click on  the site to join<\/li>\n<li>the  user will now be a member of the site.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have made recently improvements to the process of becoming a member of a Joinable site.
