(Think of this as a &#8216;soft&#8217; hide function, for cosmetic purposes&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2015\/10\/hide.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4361\" alt=\"hide\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2015\/10\/hide-300x259.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2015\/10\/hide-300x259.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2015\/10\/hide.jpg 351w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>How to completely disable access to the content in a (hidden) tool<\/h2>\n<p>Material in a hidden tool is still accessible to a student (with the <strong>access<\/strong> role) in other ways, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>from the summary (&#8216;quick view&#8217;) on the right hand side of the Home page, e.g. Announcements, Calendar, Forums<\/li>\n<li>from the Resources\/Announcements\/Calendar area in their individual <strong>My Workspace<\/strong> &#8212; they can access Resources\/Announcements\/Calendar in all sites in which they are a member (<strong>even in sites in which that tool is hidden<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>it is possible to &#8216;guess&#8217; or formulate the applicable URL that will link directly to the tool in question.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are several ways to ensure that student access to the <strong>content<\/strong> of a hidden WebLearn tool is completely disabled:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> <strong>Remove the &#8216;read&#8217; permission from the access role in the tool in question:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How to do this? In the tool, click on the <strong>Permissions<\/strong> link, then <strong><span style=\"color: #993300\">remove the tick<\/span><\/strong> in the &#8216;access&#8217; column alongside &#8216;read&#8217; or &#8216;view&#8217;:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2015\/10\/remove-read2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4371\" alt=\"remove read2\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2015\/10\/remove-read2.jpg\" width=\"608\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2015\/10\/remove-read2.jpg 608w, https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2015\/10\/remove-read2-300x122.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0<\/strong> <strong>If the tool is &#8216;group aware&#8217;, you can protect it (and also folders\/files in Resources) to staff-only groups<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How to do this?<\/strong> Site Info &gt; Manage Subgroups &gt; create a staff-only group; then go back to the tool in question and edit its properties to &#8216;Display this folder (or announcement etc.) to selected groups&#8217;. For example, to protect a folder in Resources to a group:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2015\/10\/staff-only.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4378\" alt=\"staff only\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2015\/10\/staff-only.jpg\" width=\"676\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2015\/10\/staff-only.jpg 676w, https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2015\/10\/staff-only-300x135.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Resources is a little different in terms of permissions<\/h2>\n<p>In the <strong>Resources<\/strong> tool the &#8216;read&#8217; permission is mandatory. Removing the &#8216;read&#8217; permission from the access role in <strong>Resources<\/strong> would mean that the access user would not be able to read other files, such as attachments&#8230;. Therefore, instead of option 1 above, use option 3:<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.
