Other WebLearn users may be interested in the answer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2013\/10\/joinable1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3110\" alt=\"joinable\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2013\/10\/joinable1.jpg\" width=\"711\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2013\/10\/joinable1.jpg 711w, https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2013\/10\/joinable1-275x300.jpg 275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 711px) 100vw, 711px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Answer<\/h2>\n<p>The effect produced when you select one or more of the <strong>Additional Access<\/strong> tick boxes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">and<\/span> the Joinability option &#8216;Can be joined&#8230;&#8217; depends on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>whether or not the person is a WebLearn user (i.e. an Oxford user or an external user who has a WebLearn account);<\/li>\n<li>whether or not the WebLearn user is currently logged in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">** A person can only join a site if they are a WebLearn user <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">and<\/span> they are logged in.** <\/span><br \/>\nHowever, you can exercise differing degrees of control over how they browse or join the site, as we explain in the next two sections.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Allow a person to browse a site and then to decide whether to join it<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><em>The person is a logged-in WebLearn user <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">and<\/span> belongs to a group that has been granted access to the site through one or more of the <strong>Additional Access <\/strong>options.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You can allow people in one or more <strong>Additional Access<\/strong> categories to browse the site without necessarily joining it. WebLearn does not automatically ask the person if they would like to join the site. However, if they decide to do so, they can go to &#8216;Site Info&#8217; and click on\u00a0&#8216;Join this site&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>You will know who has joined the site (by looking at the list of site members), but you have no control over who has only visited it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>Example:<\/em><\/span> <\/strong>You have set up a site for a particular undergraduate course. You also want to allow any Oxford user who is interested in the course to visit\u00a0the site: e.g. to see the reading lists and read uploaded articles. In this case, you tick the &#8216;All Oxford Users&#8217; category (under the heading\u00a0&#8216;Oxford&#8217;).<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2013\/10\/all.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3136\" alt=\"all\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2013\/10\/all.jpg\" width=\"157\" height=\"94\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIf an Oxford\u00a0user who visits that site wishes to receive email notifications of new content and enjoy other benefits of site membership, they can join the site as described above.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Require a person to join a site before they can browse it<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><em>The person is a logged-in WebLearn user, but does <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">not<\/span> belong to a group that has been granted access to the site through one or more of the <strong>Additional Access <\/strong>options.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You can allow people to access the content of a site even if they are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">not<\/span> in one of the <strong>Additional Access<\/strong> categories that you have specified for that site. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">However, they must first join the site<\/span>. If a logged-in WebLearn user tries to access the site, but doesn&#8217;t belong to one of your specified <strong>Additional Access<\/strong> categories, then WebLearn informs them that they aren&#8217;t currently a member and invites them to join the site.<\/p>\n<p>This means that you can know exactly who has joined the site, even one-time visitors.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>Example:<\/em><\/span> <\/strong>You have set up a site for a particular undergraduate course. You also want to allow any other <strong>undergraduate<\/strong> who is interested in the course to visit the\u00a0site: e.g. to see the reading lists and read uploaded articles. In this case, you tick the &#8216;Undergraduate Students&#8217; category (under the heading\u00a0&#8216;Oxford Card Statuses&#8217;):<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2013\/10\/ug_students.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3135\" alt=\"ug_students\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/files\/2013\/10\/ug_students.jpg\" width=\"184\" height=\"209\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIf, say, a <strong>postgraduate<\/strong> student wishes to browse that site for its materials, WebLearn obliges them to join it first.<\/p>\n<h3>Notes<\/h3>\n<p>1. If a person is a WebLearn user but is not currently logged in,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">or<\/span> if they are\u00a0a member of the general public (i.e. not a WebLearn user):\u00a0:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If the site is publicly accessible (i.e. the &#8216;Anyone&#8217; box has been ticked), they can browse the site, but cannot join it.<\/li>\n<li>If the site is not publicly accessible, WebLearn will inform them that the site is unavailable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2. If you don&#8217;t tick any of the <strong>Additional Access<\/strong> boxes, then the Joinability option &#8216;Can be joined by anyone with authorization to log in&#8217; permits anyone with a WebLearn account to become a member of the site: i.e. external users with WebLearn accounts, as well as Oxford users.<\/p>\n<p>3.
