We collected and analysed student feedback to produce a number of generic recommendations for departments, colleges and the central WebLearn team.\u00a0One of the recommendations emerged from the expressed student need for recorded lectures to be made available in WebLearn:<\/p>\n<p><strong>RECOMMENDATION 1.2: Lecturers are encouraged to make recorded lectures available in WebLearn.\u00a0 This can be done using various tools and techniques such as WebEx, audio commentaries with Powerpoint slideshows, students making audio recordings of lectures (with permission), sourcing existing relevant podcasts etc. Contact the IT Services <a href=\"mailto:podcasts@it.ox.ac.uk\">podcasting<\/a> or <a href=\"mailto:weblearn.ox.ac.uk\">WebLearn<\/a> teams to find out more.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are some possible routes to follow and suggestions about how to achieve the end result:<\/p>\n<table style=\"padding: 2px 6px 4px 6px;border: #dddddd 2px solid\" width=\"100%\" rules=\"all\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"border: #dddddd 2px solid\">\n<th>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Possible route<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/th>\n<th>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>How to do it<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"border: #dddddd 2px solid\">\n<td><strong>Students record audio during lectures:<\/strong> this is probably the quickest and easiest way; students probably already do this, with or without permission<\/td>\n<td>Record and upload audio file into the<strong> Podcasts tool<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/weblearn.ox.ac.uk\/access\/content\/group\/info\/least\/PostPodcasts39.pdf\">WebLearn<\/a>) \u2013 configure the tool permissions so that students are able to create and modfy their own audio files<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"border: #dddddd 2px solid\">\n<td><strong>Lecturers record audio commentaries:<\/strong> like point 1, audio commentary based on a slide show is of limited use without slides\/slide timings<\/td>\n<td>Record and upload audio file into the<strong> Podcasts tool<\/strong> (WebLearn)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"border: #dddddd 2px solid\">\n<td><strong>Source existing OER podcasts:<\/strong> there are many in the <a href=\"http:\/\/podcasts.ox.ac.uk\/\"><span style=\"color: #800080\">podcasts.ox.ac.uk<\/span><\/a> collection, e.g. the series on the History of Medical Sciences (<a href=\"https:\/\/history.medsci.ox.ac.uk\/seminars\/\">https:\/\/history.medsci.ox.ac.uk\/seminars\/<\/a>), or other repositories like Jorum (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jorum.ac.uk\/\"><span style=\"color: #800080\">http:\/\/www.jorum.ac.uk\/<\/span><\/a>). \u00a0Various open educational resources (OERs) are great for general interest\/public engagement, but the students in the WLSE project were requesting recordings of their own lecturers\u2019 teaching, focused on the local syllabus<\/td>\n<td>Use the<strong> Oxford Podcasts tool<\/strong> (WebLearn) \u2013\u00a0 it allows you to browse <a href=\"http:\/\/podcasts.ox.ac.uk\/\"><span style=\"color: #800080\">podcasts.ox.ac.uk<\/span><\/a> and automatically import selected items with media player<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"border: #dddddd 2px solid\">\n<td><strong>Lecturers record audio with slideshow:<\/strong>In Med Sci there are a number of lecturers who simply record audio over their PowerPoint slideshows in their rooms just using a desktop microphone (i.e. not live) \u2013 this is built into PowerPoint and doesn\u2019t need external audio programs like <a href=\"http:\/\/audacity.sourceforge.net\/download\/\"><span style=\"color: #800080\">Audacity<\/span><\/a>. It\u2019s then relatively easy to convert to a video\/Flash and upload it into WebLearn<\/td>\n<td>Record and upload media file into the<strong> Podcasts tool<\/strong> (WebLearn)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"border: #dddddd 2px solid\">\n<td>Medical Sciences records live audio and the VGA signal to the projector in a number of lecture situations; contact the <a href=\"mailto:msdlt@medsci.ox.ac.uk\">Medical Sciences Learning Technologies Group<\/a><\/td>\n<td>This requires some special equipment (a \u00a3700 analogue to digital convertor) and host the videos on a <strong>streaming server<\/strong> (\u00a3700 for software); but they are accessed from a link in WebLearn<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"border: #dddddd 2px solid\">\n<td><strong>WebEx:<\/strong> In Medical\u00a0Sciences, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oucs.ox.ac.uk\/%20webex\/faq.xml\">WebEx<\/a> is increasingly used to:<br \/>\n&#8211; Run seminars\/tutorials with students at a distance<br \/>\n&#8211; Broadcast, live, lecture courses so students not in Oxford can see them live. Some lecturers even allow \u2018Chat\u2019 questions during the lecture. If you\u2019re doing this anyway, it\u2019s just a question of pressing a button to record to server space provided by WebEx. The link can then be placed in WebLearn. This is Med Sci\u2019s preferred long-term model for lecture recording<\/td>\n<td><strong>WebEx<\/strong>:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oucs.ox.ac.uk\/%20webex\/faq.xml\">http:\/\/www.oucs.ox.ac.uk\/ webex\/faq.xml<\/a><br \/>\nWebEx provides the space to store the files<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Further suggestions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Contact your local IT support officer: <\/strong>They may have a preferred option and be able to help you do it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Technology tools<\/strong>: Visit Russell Stannard\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachertrainingvideos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Teacher Training Videos website <\/a>for more information and online tutorials about adding voice to your slideshows, and various voice recording, podcasting, screen capturing and webcam software tools.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The WebLearn Student Experience (WLSE) project was run during Michaelmas term 2012.
