{"id":2440,"date":"2013-01-22T15:08:31","date_gmt":"2013-01-22T15:08:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oucs.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/?p=2440"},"modified":"2017-10-24T11:22:47","modified_gmt":"2017-10-24T10:22:47","slug":"byte-sized-site-management-site-info-tool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/adamweblearn\/2013\/01\/byte-sized-site-management-site-info-tool\/","title":{"rendered":"Byte sized Site Management (Site Info) tool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Questions and Answers that emerged from the <strong>WebLearn Bytes \u2013 Site Management<\/strong> (<strong>Site Info<\/strong>) session on 22 January 2013: (some points venture into other tools, not only the <strong>Site Info<\/strong> tool&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> Can you use WebLearn for student peer review?<br \/>\n<strong>A:<\/strong> Yes: use either the <strong>Forums<\/strong> (Discussions) tool for all students to be able to view and comment on all essays (they submit their essay as an attachment); or use the <strong>Assignments<\/strong> tool (grant the access role permissions to read\/mark assignments) <em>[Note added 24 Oct 2017: the <strong>Assignments<\/strong> tool now offers a &#8216;peer review&#8217; option, so use that feature and ignore the previous comment about permissions]<\/em>. Both tools are &#8216;group aware&#8217;, and both can be set to open\/close at predetermined dates and times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> Can you use WebLearn for peer review of conference papers when organising a conference?<br \/>\n<strong>A:<\/strong> You can use the <strong>Resources<\/strong> tool for document sharing, but anonymity is not possible. You can use the <strong>Email Archive<\/strong> (mailing list) and <strong>Email Sender<\/strong> tools to communicate with site participants (the latter tool is group aware).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> How do you add the <strong>Reading List<\/strong> tool?<br \/>\n<strong>A:<\/strong> The <strong>Reading List<\/strong> is not a standard tool such as other tools that are added via <strong>Site Info &gt; Edit Tools<\/strong>. The <strong>Reading List<\/strong> is a type of resource, and is added into a folder in <strong>Resources<\/strong>, using the <strong>Add &gt; Add Reading List<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> How can I find out who my <strong>Local WebLearn Coordinator<\/strong> is?<br \/>\n<strong>A:<\/strong> Go to the WebLearn Guidance site (<a href=\"https:\/\/weblearn.ox.ac.uk\/info\">https:\/\/weblearn.ox.ac.uk\/info<\/a>) and find the <a href=\"https:\/\/weblearn.ox.ac.uk\/access\/content\/group\/info\/guidance\/coords.html\" target=\"_blank\">List of Local WebLearn Coordinators <\/a>in the &#8220;Getting started&#8221; box.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HINTS AND TIPS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clarify the purpose of your WebLearn space &#8211; there are many good tools for sharing and they are easy to use, but students need to be encouraged to participate. &#8220;If you build it, they won&#8217;t necessarily come!&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Clarify expectations of your own involvement in communication tools, and what you expect of your students.<\/li>\n<li>Consider providing a forum discussion or chat area for your students to conduct their own informal, unmoderated discussions.
