An enthusiastic audience of 27 brought the room over capacity, evidence of the wide interest in building interactive visualisations at the University.<\/p>\n<p>Talks were invited from researchers with existing visualisations or datasets they would like to visualise, and from the developers of specialist visualisation tools built here at Oxford.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/laposte.academia.edu\/AlexandreTessier\">Dr. Alexandre Tessier<\/a> (visiting the Faculty of History) discussed his study of Early-Modern European Mail services and his interest in visualising how the network developed and changed across the three centuries in his field of study. This project is part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.culturesofknowledge.org\/\">Cultures of Knowledge<\/a> program.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.music.ox.ac.uk\/about\/people\/graduate-students\/research-students\/marilou-polymeropoulou\/\">Marilou Polymeropoulou<\/a>\u00a0(Faculty of Music) presented on using networks and social network analysis (SNA) as a method for visualising data in the social sciences and humanities with amusing clips from the <a href=\"http:\/\/europein8bits.com\/documentary\">Europe in 8bits<\/a>\u00a0documentary accompanying her work on visualising the ethnography of 8bit music across the world.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/acit-rs-team\/team\/\">Rowan Wilson<\/a> (IT Services) has a project to visualise data using <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/acit-rs-team\/visualising-research-data-in-3d-with-blender\/\">Blender 3D<\/a>\u00a0and demonstrated the capabilities of Blender for photo-realistic rendering, rigging and animation.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.compas.ox.ac.uk\/people\/william-allen\/\">William Allen<\/a> (Migration Observatory) provided an overview of how the Migration Observatory has used interactive visualisations to give the public a window into the <a href=\"http:\/\/migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk\/data-and-resources\/maps\">2011 Census<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/atomprobe.materials.ox.ac.uk\/people.html\">Daniel Haley<\/a> (Materials Science) demonstrated the fascinating\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/threedepict.sourceforge.net\">3Depict<\/a> software for visualising 3D point clouds, with integrated visualisations for charge\/mass and spectroscopy data.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geog.ox.ac.uk\/staff\/bhennig.html\">Benjamin Hennig<\/a> (Geography) is pictured top-right discussing his work with cartograms on <a title=\"http:\/\/worldmapper.org\" href=\"http:\/\/worldmapper.org\">http:\/\/worldmapper.org<\/a> and <a title=\"http:\/\/londonmapper.org\" href=\"http:\/\/londonmapper.org\">http:\/\/londonmapper.org<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.well.ox.ac.uk\/ben-jeffery\">Ben Jeffery<\/a> (Wellcome Trust Centre) works on the impressive <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/cggh\/panoptes\/tree\/Pn1.6\">Panoptes<\/a>\u00a0tool for exploring and visualising research data, with a particular focus on genomic data.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.compbio.ox.ac.uk\/CBRG_home\/CBRG_personnel.shtml\">Stephen Taylor<\/a> (Computational Biology) gave an excellent overview of the Oxford developed <a href=\"http:\/\/demo.zegami.com\/\">Zegami<\/a> tool for image collection categorisation with integrated analysis and visualisation tools.<\/li>\n<li>Andrew Stretton (ChemBioHub) is the web developer for <a href=\"http:\/\/chembiohub.ox.ac.uk\">ChemBioHub<\/a>, building a platform for researchers to organise and collaborate on chemical biology research with built-in visualisation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note: In the interest of openness, Martin Hadley&#8217;s introductory presentation and the results of the cake survey are available through this Shiny app,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/martinjhnhadley.shinyapps.io\/LiveDataSiG16thNov\">https:\/\/martinjhnhadley.shinyapps.io\/LiveDataSiG16thNov<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2083\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/acit-rs-team\/files\/2015\/11\/Screen-Shot-2015-11-18-at-15.55.37.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2083\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2083 \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/acit-rs-team\/files\/2015\/11\/Screen-Shot-2015-11-18-at-15.55.37-300x91.png\" alt=\"Cake preference chart\" width=\"300\" height=\"91\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/acit-rs-team\/files\/2015\/11\/Screen-Shot-2015-11-18-at-15.55.37-300x91.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs-new.it.ox.ac.uk\/acit-rs-team\/files\/2015\/11\/Screen-Shot-2015-11-18-at-15.55.37.png 1021w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2083\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cake preferences for the Live Data SiG held on 16th November<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first Live Data Network event was hosted by the OeRC on\u00a0Monday 16th November\u00a0with presentations from nine researchers from across the University and introduced by Professor of Visualisation, Min Chen.
